Welder to receive GBP 37,000 payout

A Sheffield welder who was forced out of his job following a work injury has been granted more than GBP 37,000 in compensation.

Kevin Hartley, 63, fell whilst lifting a heavy piece of equipment at a Network Rail depot in 2006, which caused a slipped disc in his back and a damaged sciatic nerve, Sheffield paper The Star reports.

Although he was able to return to work after several months of recovery, the injury was so severe that he was unable to perform even light duties.

Mr Hartley told the paper: "I worked in that job for over 30 years but I will never be able to return to it.

"Some days I find just sitting still difficult, so I can’t even do a desk job."

The GBP 37,000 injury compensation payout will help to fund the private treatment he received for the injury due to long NHS waiting lists.

Ill health arising from poor manual handling procedures are among the most common causes of work injury in the UK, according to figures from the Health and Safety Executive.ADNFCR-2070-ID-19265192-ADNFCR
