A confectionery company in Telford has been fined GBP 75,000 after an employee was involved in an accident at work that involved his head being hit with a one tonne force.
The Magna Specialist Confectioners Ltd (MSC) employee was cleaning up a leak of refrigerant inside the safety doors of a machine on the production line at the company’s site on Stafford Park Nine, Telford, when the incident occurred.
As his head was going through the doors into the machine, a part moved to one side, closing the gap between it and another part of the machine to about 5 cm.
Luckily, his head was not fully trapped in the gap and he was thrown out of the machine.
Had his head been further in he could have died instantly.
MSC was also ordered to pay costs of GBP 37,500 by Shrewsbury Crown Court having pleaded guilty to breaching work equipment regulations.
The company had already been fined GBP 25,000 back in February 2008 after breaching other health and safety laws.
Last month, Tangerine Confectionery Limited was fined GBP 300,000 after one of its employees was crushed to death in an accident at work.
