School worker awarded injury compensation for damaged back

A classroom assistant in Colchester has been awarded a substantial injury compensation payout after sustaining a slipped disc while carrying a heavy box.

Yvonne Macklin, 48, was assisting a colleague in lifting a box full of lunches at Monkwick Infant School when she felt a sudden pain in her back, the Colchester Daily Gazette reports.

The accident speeded up the process of a degenerative spinal condition, putting her in constant pain and forcing her to use crutches, meaning she has been unable to return to work.

"I try hard to carry on with life as normal, but I have a 13-year-old son and I’m aware there are things I can no longer do with him, like cycling," she told the paper.

Ms Macklin’s employer Essex County Council agreed to settle the case out of court and gave her an unrevealed but "substantial" amount of injury compensation.

It follows news that a Hereford farm worker has received GBP 45,000 in injury compensation after losing two fingers in a piece of machinery.ADNFCR-2070-ID-19464761-ADNFCR
