Personal injury compensation – Bookmakers fined for security failures

A bookmakers which was raided by an armed gang has been fined GBP 10,000 for failing to boost security at its Netherton branch prior to the attack.

Two female workers were opening the Fleetwoods Lane venue in April last year when a man armed with a knife ordered them to hand over cash.

One of the workers suffered a whiplash injury when she was dragged to the floor during the attack.

A Sefton Council health and safety officer had visited the branch months before the attack and had reported a number of safety concerns.

As well as failing to implement measures to correct the poor outside lighting, lack of CCTV and an insecure alley, the bookmaker also failed to report the robbery and the whiplash injury, which breaches health and safety regulations.

A spokesman for Sefton council said: “These regulations are put in place to protect the safety of employees in the workplace. We are very pleased with the outcome at court and hope the fines imposed act as a warning to other businesses.”
