Packaging firm fined after employee loses finger

Factory owners are being warned to avoid injury compensation claims after a worker suffered serious hand injuries in Gateshead.

HFW Plastics was fined GBP 3,500 and ordered to pay GBP 2,000 in costs after an incident which left an employee missing the middle finger of his right hand.

The worker was attempting to clear a jammed tray from the stacking station of a machine used to produce plastic food trays.

Health and Safety Executive (HSE) inspector Zoe Feather said it is imperative for employers to avoid liability for injury compensation claims by ensuring adequate safeguards are in place.

She added: "During production, blockages and jams often occur in machinery leading to a high number of accidents in the workplace when employees attempt to clear them themselves."

The case follows a similar incident in which the south Wirral firm Metal Containers was fined after an employee suffered a double fracture to his finger when he attempted to clear a blockage from a machine.ADNFCR-2070-ID-19215346-ADNFCR
