North-east hospitals pay out GBP 40 million in injury compensation

Some GBP 40 million was paid out in injury compensation to people affected by botched operations and other medical blunders in north-east hospitals last year, it has been revealed.

An investigation by the Journal has found that some individual hospital trusts alone paid GBP 8.5 million in the past 12 months over mistakes that left patients with permanent illnesses and injuries.

David Stout, acting chief executive of NHS North East, said that the organisation is working with its partners in an effort to reduce these kinds of incidents and their subsequent injury compensation bills.

"Patients deserve the highest quality healthcare and it is important to remember that the vast majority of the hundreds of thousands of people treated within NHS North East every year experience good quality, safe and effective care," he told the paper.

It follows reports in the Western Morning News that hospitals and health trusts in Devon and Cornwall have paid out more than GBP 17 million in injury compensation and litigation costs in the last year.ADNFCR-2070-ID-19545903-ADNFCR
