Lift company fined GBP 20k over accident at work

Lift company J Brown Services Ltd has been fined GBP 20,000 over an accident at work that saw an employee lose his life.

Health and safety failings led to self-employed lift engineer Andy Bates being crushed to death.

The 35-year-old was stood on the top of a lift as he finished its installation at a site on Woodstock Street, near Oxford Street in central London, when a rogue command caused it to start moving upwards.

He was trapped between the top of the lift car and the top of the doorway, sustaining fatal injuries as a result.

"The tragic events … illustrate the critical importance of having sufficient protective features within a control system," said Health and Safety Executive inspector Kevin Shorten.

Last month, waste management and recycling company SITA UK Limited was fined GBP 210,000 after one of its employees was crushed to death between a refuse lorry and a bulldozer.
