Injury compensation payout branded “a joke”

The injury compensation payment offered to a teenage girl who was stabbed 23 times has provoked anger from her family.

Jessica Knight was just 14 when she was left fighting for her life after being stabbed in the face, chest, neck and back in Chorley’s Astley Park.

She was left with a perforated upper and lower bowel, a collapsed lung and fell into a coma shortly after the unprovoked incident.

However, the injury compensation payout she has received from the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority – just GBP 18,895 – has been criticised by her parents, who described the award as a "joke".

"If she had suffered the same injuries in a car accident then we would have been talking hundreds of thousands of pounds, but is it right that all she has been through is worth GBP 18,000?" commented her mother Jill Walmsley.

It follows news that the family of a British woman killed in a bomb attack in Turkey have been awarded more than GBP 1 million in compensation.ADNFCR-2070-ID-19398136-ADNFCR
