Injury compensation for ‘bungled births’

Maternity services in Highgate Hill and Hampstead have been criticised after two large injury compensation payouts were awarded for negligent natal care.

The Royal Free in Hampstead was forced to pay almost GBP 5 million and the Whittington in Highgate Hill agreed to pay GBP 115,000 following two cases which left people with lifelong disabilities, the Hampstead and Highgate Express reports.

Jodie Stock, now 19, has epilepsy, learning difficulties and physical problems after she was starved of oxygen during her birth at the Royal Free Hospital.

Additionally Taliyah Appleton-Williams stopped breathing during her birth at Whittington Hospital as a result of a severed umbilical catheter and suffered chemical burns after being cleaned with alcohol swabs.

The two cases come soon after reports in The Press and Journal that a mother has received a GBP 21,500 compensation payout from NHS Grampian following the death of her son at Aberdeen Maternity Hospital.ADNFCR-2070-ID-19184570-ADNFCR
