GBP 7,000 fine issued after man was injured in accident at work

A building designer and a contractor have been fined a total of GBP 7,000 after a man was injured in an accident at work.

One of the workers’ legs was badly broken when part of an office block being built in Kirkham collapsed on him.

"The consequences could have been much worse," said Allen Shute, the investigating Health and Safety Executive inspector in Lancashire.

He went on to say that the accident took place due to a "basic error" which should have been spotted by both the building’s designer, Peter Wallace of the Wallace Partnership, and the principal contractor, Jack Smith (Builders) Ltd.

The building collapsed because a concrete block pillar had been resting on the ground floor instead of the foundations.

Another person whose leg was crushed in an accident was Janet Lott from Coventry, who is now seeking injury compensation.

The 64-year-old’s leg became trapped in the door of a bendy bus, which then dragged her 90 ft along the road.
