GBP 173,000 injury compensation payout to West Sussex teacher

A teacher from West Sussex has been awarded more than GBP 173,000 in injury compensation after damaging her ankle when she slipped over in her school’s playground.

The teacher, who has not been named, suffered nerve damage and dislocated her right ankle while on playground duty, the Argus reports.

It is one of the largest injury compensation payouts in a number of cases that made up a total of GBP 20 million paid out to teachers across the country last year, with other accidents including slipping on polished floors and being hit by slamming gates.

Chris Keates, general secretary of the National Association of Schoolmasters/Union of Women Teachers, said that it is vital that employers at school and local authority levels abided by their legal responsibilities.

"Whilst the sums of money involved might seem very significant, no amount of money can compensate for no longer being able to pursue your chosen career," he added.
