Flowserve fined GBP 150k after man dies in accident at work

West Sussex-based Flowserve (GB) Ltd was fined GBP 150,000 at Lewes Crown Court recently, following an accident at work that lead to the death of a 21-year-old.

Philip Locke, an employee at Flowserve, was carrying out a test on a high pressure valve when he suffered fatal chest injuries.

It is believed that during the test the machine’s vent valve became detached and hit Mr Locke at high speed.

The company pleaded guilty to breaching section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and, as well as being fined GBP 150,000, it was ordered to pay full costs of GBP 66,838.

Last month, energy company npower was fined GBP 8,000 after an employee was seriously hurt in a similar incident at work.

When contractor Timothy Gossett was changing a valve at Aberthaw power station, high-pressure air escaped and forced dust into his right hand and forearm, leaving him with injuries and permanent scarring, BBC News reported.
