Firm fined after employee loses fingertips in work injury

A food processing company in Lancashire is counting the cost of failing to guard machinery properly, which can lead to injury compensation claims and fines.

Spread Newco Four, formerly known as Queen of Hearts, has been fined GBP 6,000 and ordered to pay costs of GBP 2,751 after an employee’s fingertips were severed in a serious work injury.

Paulina Lleshi was cleaning a sponge cake icing machine at the company’s Oxford factory when a large revolving screw, known as an auger, cut off the ends of two fingers on her hand.

"The risks associated with these types of cleaning machines should be properly assessed as this is one of the major causes of machinery accidents in the food industry," commented HSE inspector Matthew Lee.

It follows a similar work injury in Crumlin, in which a worker lost part of three fingers as he was attempting to clean a probe on a bagging machine at a plastics factory.ADNFCR-2070-ID-19393322-ADNFCR
