Fatal work injury prompts transport safety warning

Companies have been reminded that they may face injury compensation claims and fines if they fail to ensure transport safety after a fatal work injury in Bourne.

Shaun Porter, 31, was moving a large steel assembly around Trackline International’s factory in the town when he was obstructed by a vehicle frame in the gangway.

He raised the forks of his forklift truck to make room for his vehicle, but the load he was carrying hit the frame, causing his truck to spin around and overturn, fatally crushing him.

An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that there was a lack of marked access ways and gangways at the site, as well as no way of assessing the size and weight of loads.

Trackline International was fined GBP 7,500 and ordered to pay GBP 6,690 in costs at Lincoln Crown Court.

HSE recently warned of the importance of implementing safe systems for unloading materials after a worker’s legs were crushed at a site in Wolverhampton.ADNFCR-2070-ID-19357767-ADNFCR
