Cumbrian hospitals’ compensation payouts revealed

Hospitals in North Cumbria have paid out GBP 5.5 million in injury compensation for medical blunders between 2007 and 2008.

Two facilities, the North Cumbria Acute Hospital NHS Trust in Carlisle and the West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven, have paid out one of the highest figures in the UK for that time period, the News & Star reports.

The vast majority of the compensation payments – some GBP 5.3 million – was paid out for clinical negligence claims, while the remainder was for damage or theft.

Charlene Steel is currently seeking compensation after her fifteen month-old son suffered a brain injury during a traumatic birth.

"They were absolutely useless," she told the paper.

"If I was having another baby I’d go across to the north east. I’d never go back there."
