A construction company has been fined GBP 11,517 after an employee suffered serious work injuries when a wall collapsed on him in Wigan.
Scott Hutchinson was helping to demolish offices at the Millers Lane site last year when the wall fell on him, causing fractures to his leg, collar bone and arm, as well as injuries to his upper and lower back.
He has been unable to return to work since the incident, after which an investigation revealed that his employer had failed to manage the demolition of the building properly.
"Only one of the workers had previous experience of demolition work but he did not stay on the site the whole time," commented Health and Safety Executive (HSE) inspector Tom Merry.
"The others had neither the experience nor qualifications needed to demolish buildings."
A HSE event tomorrow (November 17th) at the National Construction College in Birmingham will highlight the dangers of asbestos to people in the building industry.
