Compensation awarded for wheelchair ramp injury

A former college lecturer has been awarded an injury compensation payout after he suffered wrist and shoulder injuries at his workplace.

Warren Spour, a motor vehicle lecturer at South Tyneside College, slipped on a wet wheelchair ramp while entering a classroom in October 2006, the Shields Gazette reports.

In the three years since the accident took place he has required an extensive course of physiotherapy and fears the pain he still experiences will get worse with age.

"I think the whole issue of safety at places like South Tyneside College and other public buildings needs to be looked at," Mr Spour told the paper.

The college admitted liability for his injury and decided to settle out of court for an undisclosed sum, although it was keen to draw attention to its otherwise good safety record.

More than £18 million was paid out to educators last year in compensation for a variety of work injuries and classroom assaults.ADNFCR-2070-ID-19129077-ADNFCR
