Compensation award for amputated leg

A labourer in Plymouth has received a six-figure injury compensation payout from his employer after a broken ankle resulted in the loss of his leg.

William Edge was standing on a wet ladder while locking up a construction site on the city’s Elliott Street when he slipped and fell on to concrete three metres below him, the Herald reports.

Following the injury his right ankle became infected and after 16 months of treatment and eight operations doctors decided to amputate his leg below the knee.

Mr Edge has since been unable to return to work and was recently awarded a six-figure injury compensation sum from Ardmore Construction, his former employer.

"I have been deprived of my career and my role as the bread-winner in the family," he told the Herald.

The Health and Safety Executive recently advised employers to take precautions for staff who are working at height, following an incident in which an employee was seriously injured when he fell through a roof in Berkshire.ADNFCR-2070-ID-19153192-ADNFCR
