Companies warned after drill injury at work

Companies have been reminded to avoid work injuries and injury compensation claims after a hammer manufacturer in Solihull was fined GBP 2,500 over an incident which caused severe damage to an employee’s hand.

Aaron Watts was working at Thor Hammer Company in Shirley when the glove on his right hand became entangled in an unguarded pedestal drilling machine.

He suffered injuries to the back of his hand and a deep laceration to his palm, forcing him to take a month off work.

Health and Safety Executive (HSE) inspector Clive Neil said: "This offence is all the more serious because the company had received previous advice from HSE about the need to guard its drilling machines – and had even identified the need in its own risk assessment – but did not do it."

It follows news that a manufacturing firm in Cannock has been fined GBP 40,000 following a similar work injury in which an employee suffered a fractured arm.ADNFCR-2070-ID-19667195-ADNFCR
