Carillion JM Ltd fined GBP 185,000 after accident

A major UK construction company has been fined GBP 185,000 after an employee was struck by a reversing truck, those considering compensation claims may be interested to discover.

Carillion JM Ltd will also pay GBP 9,821 in costs after pleading guilty to three health and safety offences at Manchester Crown Court.

The accident in question took place when Michael Gresty was hit by a reversing Ford Transit truck at the Kingsway Business Park in Rochdale in 2008, hospitalising him and making it unlikely he will ever be able to return to work.

Neil Martin, inspector with the Health and Safety Executive, highlighted the fact that it was unacceptable that a company as big as Carmillion had not performed a risk assessment for the site.

He said: "Michael Gresty is lucky to be alive following this very serious incident and he will never fully recover. His injuries could easily have been prevented if Carillion had followed basic health and safety procedures."

Earlier this week, unsafe working conditions that lead to an accident resulted in Perryman Properties being fined GBP 7,000 and GBP 4,486 in costs.ADNFCR-2070-ID-19616998-ADNFCR
