A speciality bread manufacturer has been fined GBP 6,000 over a work injury that saw a worker break his wrist having become entangled in a bagel forming machine.
The Country Style Foods employee saw a build-up of dough on a roller in the machine and used a scraper to remove it.
Due to a lack of guarding in the machine, the worker’s hand and wrist were dragged into it and became trapped between the roller and another moving part.
As well as the GBP 6,000 fine, the company was also ordered to pay GBP 4,570 in costs.
Health and Safety executive inspector Angus Robbins said: "There were clear failings on this occasion, and we hope today’s prosecution serves as a reminder that we will call to account employers who fail in their duties to protect their employees."
The worker involved may well contact an injury solicitor seeking a compensation claim over the accident at work.
Compensation is currently being sought by the family of a man who was crushed to death by a bale of scrap metal, the South Wales Argus reported earlier this week.
