Accident at work leads to employee losing foot

An accident at work which resulted in an employee losing his foot has led to a Penrith wood processing plant being fined GBP 20,000.

Allan Wilson Jenkinson, aged 56, of Clifton Moor, Clifton, was prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) for putting workers at risk, after a 24-year-old worker had his foot completely severed by a log shavings machine just two weeks into his new job.

The incident occurred when an employee of A W Jenkinson Forest Products in Clifton was using a chainsaw to deal with a stuck log in the log box at the end of a conveyor, but lost his balance and his right foot became caught in the revolving blades at the bottom.

"This case illustrates the personal consequences suffered by employees when workplace risks are not managed effectively," the HSE stated.

It comes after Arcadia Food Industries Limited was prosecuted by HSE after an incident in which a machine severed one of an employee’s fingers and badly cut another.
