Going on Holiday? Check the small print

Holidaymakers planning on activities such as jet skiing, quad biking or parasailing while they are on foreign soil are being advised to double check the small print on their insurance policies before they go as many will not be covered for so-called "hazardous activities."

Where necessary, policy cover should be "topped up" to make sure insurance is in place if things go wrong, says Trevor Baker, Solicitor at Hayward Baker Solicitors in Fareham.

"We have seen examples in the past of insurers refusing to provide cover if injury results from an activity they consider "hazardous". If the activity is outside the scope of the cover or excluded, the policy may be void. This can be devastating if a person has suffered life changing head or spinal injuries." says Trevor.

This can leave a person with huge overseas medical bills, the costs of specialist transport back to the UK and long term care costs. As a result the advice has to be check your policy carefully and raise any uncertainty regarding the activities you may be planning with your insurers before your leave.

Whilst a holiday is all about having fun and trying new things, if there is any risk, the same amount of care and preparation should be taken as you would at home.
