Youngster awarded compensation for brain injuries
01/04/2009Injury compensation has been paid to the family of a baby who suffered brain damage because he did not feed properly after his birth, the Harrow Times reports.
Lawyers representing Niraj Grewal convinced a court hearing that Northwick Park Hospital was to blame for the injuries he suffered.
The now seven-year-old boy was admitted to the hospital with hypoglycaemia in the days following his birth, after midwives failed to act on complaints from his mother that her child was not breastfeeding.
Niraj now suffers from learning disabilities and epilepsy, needs constant care and is unlikely to ever be able to live an independent life.
Jane Weakley, the family's lawyer, told the paper: "This situation was entirely preventable had the correct care and advice in relation to feeding been administered."
The injury compensation payout follows action taken against East Sussex Hospitals Trust by the families of 13 people who died following an outbreak of C Dificile.
