Woman wins compensation over hospital blunder

27/08/2010

A woman from Surrey has won compensation after a hospital left a medical swab in her body by accident.

Elizabeth Kane, 31, was giving birth to her first son at St Helier Hospital in December 2007 when the blunder occurred, the Sutton Guardian reports.

After the birth, medical staff used swabs to stem Ms Kane's bleeding while she was given stitches, but one was never removed.

Ms Kane felt unwell when she returned home and suffered from fainting, headaches and nausea.

The swab was eventually discovered and removed but Ms Kane told the newspaper that she is still suffering from post-traumatic stress from the incident.

Speaking of her compensation claim she said: "It wasn't about the money. I just wanted them to understand what they had done and take responsibility."

Earlier this month, a boy who lost his eye following a mistake made at Northampton General Hospital was awarded GBP 50,000 in injury compensation.
