Whiplash injury claims 'driving up insurance costs'

15/09/2011

The increasing number of people claiming for whiplash injuries in the UK is driving up the cost of insurance, according to one organisation.

That is the opinion of Otto Thoresen, the Association of British Insurers director general, who has welcomed a call from Office of Fair Trading for evidence to be presented explaining why premiums for car insurance are so high in Britain.

He noted that rising costs from personal injury claims mean that drivers are paying far more for their car insurance than they used to.

Whiplash injuries being suffered by motorists are among the most common ailments suffered by those involved in car crashes, he explained, which in turn is increasing premiums.

Recently, a head-on vehicle collision involving a black Nisan Micra and a blue Mercedes occurred in Brentwood Essex, prompting increased calls for local authorities to make the accident blackspot safer for motorists that pass through the junction, because they are at increased risk of suffering from whiplash injury.
