Toxic sofa victims await injury compensation ruling

Thousands of victims of burns caused by 'toxic sofas' are awaiting news on how much injury compensation they can expect to receive from retailers.

Around 5,000 people are taking action against a number of retailers, including Argos, Walmsley Furnishing and the now-defunct Land of Leather, the Birmingham Mail reports.

It follows claims that customers developed severe skin problems such as blisters and rashes after sitting on Chinese-imported furniture contaminated with known irritant DMF, which is also used as an anti-fungus measure.

"We want to put the whole thing behind us. The whole thing has been a nightmare," Christopher Moore, who suffered from a rash and peeling skin after buying one of the sofas, told the paper.

A judgement is expected on the issue following a two-day hearing at the Royal Courts of Justice in London.

Early last month, it was reported that pensioner Maurice Hemingsley had become the first person in the UK to receive an injury compensation payout for the burns.
