Toxic sofa case 'could be biggest consumer action ever'

01/03/2010

UK consumers who suffered toxic burns from a line of sofas have renewed their multi-million pound fight for injury compensation, after more than 350 Land of Leather customers blamed the furniture for rashes and blisters.

It is believed that the amount of injury compensation could reach as high as GBP 20 million, which would be the largest consumer injury action ever taken in the UK, the Daily Mirror reports.

Compensation payouts to more than 2,000 people suffering from the sofas, which were sprayed with an anti-mould chemical believed to have caused severe allergic reactions to many, have been delayed pending the action.

However, the case has been complicated by the fact that Land of Leather went into administration last year, while insurers Zurich are denying liability.

As many as 200,000 of the sofas were believed to have been sold by the time the case was widely reported last year.ADNFCR-2070-ID-19643722-ADNFCR
