Terror victims 'may receive more injury compensation'

The British victims of the Mumbai terror attacks which occurred on September 26th last year are likely to receive injury compensation from the government.

Injury compensation law previously excluded citizens who were hurt by terrorists abroad, leaving them eligible for only a GBP 15,000 payout through the Red Cross emergency fund.

However, a decision to grant them more assistance - which will include the lifting of the current GBP 500,000 award for all victims of crime - is likely to be announced next month after Gordon Brown intervened personally, according to the Observer.

"The worst thing has been the uncertainty – not knowing whether the government was going to help, or whether we would have to try to raise funds ourselves," Will Pike, who faces life in a wheelchair after the attacks, told the paper.

It follows news that the court of appeal has blocked an attempt by the Ministry of Defence to cut compensation to two wounded soldiers.
