Teachers awarded £18m compensation in 2008

Teachers were awarded more than £18 million in compensation last year for a variety of work injuries and employment disputes.

Around half of these compensation payouts were secured by teachers' union NASUWT, which also obtained one of the largest individual lump sums of £220,000 for a teacher injured by a falling box of stationery.

Other payouts were awarded for violent attacks by pupils, including £89,000 to a teacher who lost her vision after one assault and £106,000 to a teacher who suffered neck and shoulder injuries while restraining an autistic pupil.

Recently an IT teacher at an east London school was awarded £275,000 in compensation after a 12-year-old pupil attacked and tried to strangle him.

Accident claims also contributed towards the total amount, with cases such as the £160,000 payout to a teacher who was forced to retire early after slipping on icy steps.
