Shop fitting company fined for asbestos exposure

23/08/2010

A shop fitting company that could have found itself at the centre of a compensation claim has been fined GBP 4,000 after exposing its workers to asbestos.

Employees of Eastern Regional Shopfitters Ltd were exposed to the potentially dangerous substance when they were ripping out old shop fittings in Manchester's Arndale Centre in October 2009.

One of them, Mark Green, 45, from Cambridge, said: "It plays on my mind. I am more aware of the possibility I may become ill and that my life has unwittingly been put on the line."

If Mr Green does become ill because of the incident, he could well seek the services of an injuries solicitor.

In addition to the fine, Eastern Regional Shopfitters was ordered to pay GBP 3,215 towards the cost of the prosecution.

Earlier in the month, Lincolnshire ship breaking company Acetech Construction Limited was fined GBP 3,400 after it also put its workers and others in danger of exposure to asbestos.
