Sheet metal company at risk of compensation claims?

09/08/2010

A sheet metal manufacturing company could have put itself at the centre of injury compensation claims after it exposed its employees to high levels of lead.

Employees at Anglia Lead Ltd's plant in Barker Street, Norwich, had to cast molten metal into lead sheeting.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that the workers could have breathed in lead dust at the factory, as well as absorbing the substance into their skin or ingesting it if they did not wash their hands before eating.

Anglia Lead Ltd appeared at Norwich Magistrates Court and admitted failing to ensure the health and safety of its workers.

It was fined GBP 10,000 and ordered to pay GBP 10,556 in costs, whereas the company's director himself was fined a further GBP 10,000.

Back in April, metal-processing company All Metal Services Ltd was fined GBP 12,500 after one of its employees was involved in an accident at work.
