Seven work injuries add up to large bill for council

A local council has faced injury compensation claims totalling £56,100 over the past five years, a freedom of information request by the Lancashire Evening Post has found.

South Ribble council has made the payments to seven separate employees since 2004 for a variety of work injuries.

The compensation claims included £5,700 for a worker who cut his foot, £7,700 to a man who was injured descending from a council wagon and a £12,766 payout to an employee who hurt his shoulder lifting a mower.

A female office worker employed by the council was also awarded £6,300 for an upper limb disorder contracted while sitting at her desk.

Councils are being warned to ensure adequate safety procedures are in place for all employees in order to guard against the cost of settling injury compensation claims.

The Health and Safety Executive recently reported that Camden council was fined £40,000 following the tragic electrocution of a scaffolder.
