Scout launches compensation claim after rugby injury

16/11/2011

A young scout has won a personal injury claim after he was injured during a game of rugby when his adult scout leader tackled him to the ground.

The 11-year-old was left with a bloody nose and injured arm after being "spear tackled" by an adult troop leader.

Gloucester Magistrates' Court heard that Jon Ingram, a scout leader, was angry after the youngster knocked another boy to the ground in a game of tails.

David Nicholas, prosecuting, said: "The defendant reacted to that incident and tackled the victim in what can only be described in rugby terms as an illegal spear tackle, deserving a red card."

The victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, told the court how he heard his scout leader Mr Ingram say "How would you like it?" shortly before he charged at him with a wild expression on his face and arms flayed.

Mr Ingram, who is no longer a scout leader, was fined GBP 500, ordered to pay GBP 250 compensation to the boy and GBP 800 prosecution costs.
