Police ordered to pay £ 35k in compensation

West Lothian Police have been ordered to pay GBP 35,000 in personal injury compensation to two drivers injured in separate car crashes involving police vehicles.

Laura Boyd suffered facial injuries which required surgery when her car was hit by a police van as it answered an emergency call in Pumpherston.

The scars have left her face disfigured, and her lawyers argued that the injuries have left her "embarrassed and self-conscious".

She had been seeking a personal injury compensation claim of GBP 75,000, but was awarded GBP 22,500 following the incident.

In a second incident Sheryl Skelton was hit from behind by a police car in Gilmerton Road.

She needed physiotherapy for a whiplash injury and later suffered "vivid nightmares" as a result of the car accident.

The Court of Session in Edinburgh awarded Ms Skelton GBP 12,500 in personal injury compensation.

Police were involved in 205 accidents on Lothian roads last year. Eight members of the public suffered injuries, while seven police officers were hurt.
