Pensioner awarded compensation after double misdiagnosis
02/04/2009A compensation payout has been awarded to an elderly cancer sufferer from Chingford who was misdiagnosed by two doctors.
The 71-year-old pensioner reported serious back pain to her GP in 2003 and went on to lose the use of her left arm after she was wrongly diagnosed with osteoarthritis, the Epping Guardian reports.
She referred herself to Whipps Cross Hospital in Leytonstone when her condition failed to improve, where a junior doctor failed to request an MRI scan.
After suffering an arm fracture, she was diagnosed with myeloma at St Bartholomew's Hospital and finally went on to receive radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatment.
Whipps Cross Hospital and the patient's GP admitted liability and agreed to pay her £400,000 compensation claim before the case could go to court.
The case follows a report in the Harrow Times in which a seven-year-old who suffered brain injuries shortly after his birth was awarded injury compensation from Northwick Park Hospital.
