Parents seek injury compensation over Maclaren buggies

More than 15 families are seeking injury compensation from pushchair manufacturer Maclaren, alleging that it has ignored safety warnings about its products.

The group of parents has announced plans to sue the manufacturer, claiming that their children's fingertips have been severed or damaged by the hinge of their buggies.

Paediatric consultant Dr Richard Tomlinson told the BBC that he wrote to Maclaren to urge them to reconsider the design of the buggy, after he treated one boy whose finger tip had been amputated in the mechanism.

"Mother's back was turned at the time and she didn't see it was quite clearly happening when he was playing with the buggy and when we examined the buggy the tip of the finger fell out," he added.

Maclaren recently distributed a cover kit to fit the hinges of its umbrella strollers to customers in the US and advised parents to follow safety instructions when folding or unfolding.
