OAP receives GBP 7.5k in injury compensation

08/09/2010

A pensioner from Scotland has received GBP 7,500 in injury compensation after she slipped and hurt herself in a Marks & Spencer (M&S) store.

Janet Morritt had hoped to get as much as GBP 30,000 from the department store as she had to have an operation on her hip after she slipped on a prawn cocktail that was on the floor.

Ms Morritt's writ against the retail giant stated that she had tried to prevent herself from falling to the floor when she slipped by clutching a display stand.

However, she still fell to the floor and sustained injuries, it continued.

M&S fought the 71-year-old's claim and said that she "had to take reasonable care for her own safety" and "had a duty to watch where she placed her feet".

Last month, the Star reported that 81-year-old Clary Day had made a compensation claim against Barnsley Council after injuring himself by slipping on wet grass cuttings left on a public footpath.
