OAP awarded GBP 500 after being lowered into scalding bath

29/06/2010

An elderly man who was lowered into a bath of scalding water has been awarded GBP 500 in injury compensation.

Michael Ginn, 72, suffered from first degree burns to his feet when he was put into the water on May 5th 2009.

He was taken to Southend Hospital after the incident and kept there overnight.

Rootcroft Ltd, which runs the West House Nursing Home on St Vincent's Road, Essex, was also fined GBP 5,000 and ordered to pay GBP 5,989 in costs.

Health and Safety Executive (HSE) inspector Sue Matthews said: "Rootcroft Ltd failed in its duties and instead a vulnerable resident suffered a painful injury. This could have been worse - several fatal scaldings have occurred in healthcare settings since 2001."

Earlier this year, SJ Care Homes Ltd was prosecuted by the HSE and fined GBP 5,000 for putting some of its elderly residents at risk of catching Legionnaires' disease.
