Newcastle council backs HSE campaign to reduce work injury

Newcastle city council has joined the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in its drive to reduce work injuries in the refurbishment sector and help construction firms guard against injury compensation claims.

The regulator launched the campaign in response to the lack of awareness among small property development firms about their duties as employers.

Hugh McSherry, head of building control for Newcastle city council, said following regulations is vitally important in cutting down on work injuries.

"If developers don't make sure they are complied with, it is more likely that there will be a dangerous or fatal incident on site," he added.

Some 38 people died last year in the construction and refurbishment sector, and many more were injured or suffered ill health due to poor safety practices.

HSE inspectors recently issued 39 notices on construction sites in the West Midlands, ordering them to stop working immediately due to breaches of regulations.
