Newcastle City Council fined GBP 12k over child's injury

08/09/2010

Newcastle City Council has been fined GBP 12,000 after a young girl was injured by an exhibit at one of its museums.

The five-year-old girl was at the Discovery Museum in Newcastle when the accident took place on August 17th 2009.

She placed her hand in an opening of the Floating on Air exhibit, which was not protected by a guard.

As a result, the girl's hand met with the rotating blades of a fan inside, causing her serious injuries that required immediate surgery.

Newcastle City Council pleaded guilty to health and safety offences at Newcastle Upon Tyne Magistrates Court yesterday (September 7th).

As well as being given a fine of GBP 12,000, the council was ordered to pay costs of GBP 7,733.

Last month, a seven-year-old girl from Staffordshire was awarded GBP 3,000 in injury compensation after she fractured her finger while at a Wacky Warehouse birthday party.

Caitlyn Ratcliffe trapped her finger in the door of a storage cupboard as it closed behind a member of staff at the Plough Inn in Alsager.
