MPs call for more proof in personal injury cases
12/01/2012A committee of MPs set up by the Department for Transport has argued that more proof should be presented when someone makes a whiplash injury claim.
The report published by the select committee stated that it thinks claimants should be made to provide more evidence when making a compensation claim for a neck injury after a car accident.
Analysis of personal injury claims found that the number of injury claims made to insurance companies after a road traffic accident has risen by 70 per cent in the past six years.
Louise Ellman MP claimed that 70 per cent of these claims are for whiplash like injuries, which amounts to around 554,000 claims made for whiplash during the 2010/11 reporting period.
She revealed that the problem often lays with the diagnosis of whiplash as the process is "subjective" and almost impossible for insurance companies to challenge.
The committee concluded that the government should look at establishing a ministerial committee to try and reduce car insurance costs.
