Manchester council pays out GBP 4m in compensation claims

16/08/2010

Manchester City Council has paid out more than GBP 4 million in compensation claims over the past two years.

Some 353 claims were settled in 2009/10 and 412 in the year before, the Manchester Evening News reports.

Over 90 per cent of the claims were made as the result of personal injuries that had occurred in the city and the remainder were brought by council employees.

The personal injury claims included slips and trips, accidents in the workplace and the contraction of industrial diseases.

Fewer claims were made against the council during 2008/09, but more were settled.

"Over the past year the number of successful claims against the council has fallen. This reflects our focus on the maintenance of streets and pavements," said Jim Battle, deputy leader of Manchester City Council.

Back in June, the East London and West Essex Guardian series reported that Essex County Council was at the centre of six compensation claims from people who injured themselves on High Road in Loughton.
