Man severely injured by falling panel saw

26/08/2010

A man sustained serious injuries when a panel saw fell onto his head in an accident at work.

Nicholas Holmes, 49, from Bradford, was delivering panel saws to the Saw Centre in Eglinton Street, Glasgow, on August 16th 2007 when the accident occurred.

One of the 290kg saws fell off his vehicle, hitting his head and leaving him with permanent brain damage.

His employers, Joda Freight Limited, of Riparian Way in Crosshills, West Yorkshire, pleaded guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to breaching Section 2 of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974.

"Haulage companies must make sure information is properly communicated between drivers in how a load is secured and strapped. Verbal messages through a third party may not be enough," said Health and Safety Executive inspector Jean Edgar.

Last month, Bridlington-based Advanced Scaffolding (GB) Ltd was fined GBP 3,500 after one of its roofers suffered head injuries in an accident at work.
