Man risks injury compensation claims over unsafe inflatables

07/09/2010

A man who put himself at risk of injury compensation claims by issuing fake safety certificates for inflatable amusements has been prosecuted.

Peter John Morrell, also known as Peter Michael Coltilda, of Aberconwy Road in Prestatyn, north Wales, was served with a prohibition notice in November 2008 for passing inflatables as safe to use when they were not.

However, he ignored this ban and carried on issuing safety certificates, an investigation discovered.

This week, at Shrewsbury Crown Court, Mr Morrell was given an 18-week suspended prison sentence, 60 hours of community service and was ordered to pay GBP 500 towards costs.

Health and Safety Executive inspector Janice Dale said: "Mr Morrell not only cheated the companies he issued the certificates for, but also risked the wellbeing of the young children using the inflatable and its blower."

Earlier this week, a woman from Hertfordshire, who was offered compensation after her washing machine exploded, told the Walwyn and Hatfield Times that her children could have been injured if they had been near to the appliance when it blew up.
