Injury compensation proposals welcomed by BSC

Lord Justice Jackson's proposals to cut the legal costs involved in making injury compensation claims has been given a welcome by the British Safety Council (BSC).

The recommendations are believed to have a potentially large impact on the costs of litigation incurred by employers in defending injury compensation claims, as well as reducing the cost of employer liability insurance.

Neal Stone, head of policy and public affairs at the BSC, said that the proposals are a step in the right direction but warned that there is still more work to do to improve the injury compensation system for workers and employers.

"This review has been a long time in the making and the length of the resulting report, some 580 pages, reflects the unnecessary and costly complexity of the current law," he added.

Health and safety consultancy EDP recently warned that non-compliance with safety legislation can result in heavy fines for employers.
