Injury compensation decision could pave the way for more cases

A policeman has won the right to seek injury compensation in a case which could enable many more victims of violent crime to pursue claims against their attackers.

Mark Tait, who was temporarily disabled following a collision between his squad car and a stolen Volvo in 2003, was initially unable to claim for his injuries.

However, the ruling has now been overturned by high court judge Mr Justice Stadlen, who decided the original panel "erred in law" when they told Mr Tait that the Volvo had not been used to deliberately inflict harm on him.

A new tribunal will now decide whether or not the 38-year-old policeman's injuries were so serious as to warrant an injury compensation claim.

The case follows a report in the North West Evening Mail that a man in Ulverston was made to pay £100 in compensation to a police officer after pleading guilty to racially harassing him.
