Housing developer fined GBP 30k over accident at work

01/09/2010

A housing developer has been fined GBP 30,000 after a man was paralysed in an accident at work.

Anton Burrows, 24, from Dewsbury was working as a bricklayer, sub-contracted to Strata Homes Yorkshire Ltd, on April 7th 2009 when the incident took place.

He was helping the driver of a telescopic forklift truck to lift a steel beam weighing over 300 kg onto two brick pillars.

The beam became dislodged from the pillars and crashed down on top of Mr Burrows, causing him a number of injuries, including spinal damage, which resulted in him being left paralysed from the chest down.

Health and Safety Executive inspector Alasdair Green said: "The terrible injuries sustained in this incident have changed the way of life for Mr Burrows and his family forever."

Earlier in the year, Dranson Ltd was fined GBP 8,000 after a 17-year-old worker was injured when approximately 700 kg of steel fell off a trolley onto him.
