Hospital worker secures injury compensation payout

A laundry manager from Milton Keynes has been awarded GBP 7,000 in injury compensation after her hand became stuck in a lift.

Rita Stone was moving cages full of linen out of a hospital lift when her hand became trapped between the cage and the lift door and the wheels of the cage locked - a defect she has previously reported to the hospital's laundry contractor.

Her injuries were so severe that she has to undergo a series of operations after developing a cyst on her wrist, which left her with a scar.

Ms Stone's employers, the Royal Free Hampstead NHS Trust, admitted liability and settled the claim out of court, awarding her GBP 7,000 in injury compensation.

"Employers have a duty of care to their staff and this includes making sure the tools they need to use to do their jobs are safe," commented Unison general secretary Dave Prentis.

The news comes after a 15-year-old boy left unable to walk or speak after he suffered brain damage at work was given GBP 1.35 million in injury compensation from the Colchester University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
