£ 26k injury compensation paid out over police dog attacks

Cambridgeshire Police paid out GBP 26,000 in injury compensation and costs to members of the public attacked by their dogs over the last five years.

Some GBP 10,360 was awarded to victims of the attacks, with legal costs amounting to GBP 15,484, Cambridge-news.co.uk reports.

Back in February, a man was taken to hospital after being attacked by one of the force's dogs.

He had climbed onto the roof of a local college and refused to come down. When he did, he tried to run away, which was when he was bitten by a police dog.

"Anyone asked to stop in the presence of a police dog is advised to obey as the dogs are trained to pursue," a spokeswoman for the force told the news provider.

She then explained that each dog receives a minimum of 13 weeks' intensive training before becoming operational and then undergoes a minimum of 16 days training per year.

Back in April, the Sunday Mercury reported that police forces in the Midlands paid out GBP 1 million in car accident compensation over just two years as a result of crashes involving their vehicles.
